Recommendation for pdf editor

Hi Everyone,

New linux user here. Just started the journey and decided to go with Ubuntu. I have been a windows user till now and still be using it for work purpose.

In windows I use pdf-xChange editor for pdf editing as it has many feature even in free version which is enough for me. I was looking for similar tool for my Ubuntu and found Master PDF Editor which comes close to what I have been using. I haven’t explored other options.

Can your recommend me an alternate tools which are either free or open source that has features like in above mentioned options. Ideally I am looking for a pdf viewer/editor that has

  1. highlighting,
  2. text editing,
  3. picture insertion (signature insert)
  4. many shapes to add into a page
  5. add/remove pages
  6. save page as image

I’m using Master PDF Editor 5 and I’m very happy with it. There was a free version available till version 4 and you could find downloads for it. But be aware that version 4 isn’t supported anymore and doesn’t get new updates.

While I don’t have a ton of use for PDF editors as I don’t interact with PDFs regularly, I have worked with two browser-based PDF editors that I would highly recommend, if you are ok with self-hosting or don’t want an installable editor.

Both options are self-hostable, so if you want to run your own version of them, you absolutely can and it’s pretty straightforward:

  • StirlingPDF: Server-side browser-friendly PDF editor. You can even demo it before you decide to self-host it.

  • BentoPDF: Client-side browser-friendly PDF editor. You can also demo it before you decide to self-host it.

I’m not sure if these meet 100% of your use cases, but I think they’d be pretty capable. I’ve just switched my self-hosting set up over to BentoPDF and so far I like it better than StirlingPDF.

I tried Xournal++, but I didn’t like it. Don’t know why. Maybe it would work for me also, but I tested it for a short time only.

Yeah Xournal++ is pretty ugly but if you have 1 or 2 pdfs a year to edit, ist works well.
