Gaming on Ubuntu/Linux

I stumbled on this discussion on the Ubuntu site, for those who are interested:

They make mention of

in the context of Steam.

Some other discussion on Reddit.

This looks very interesting, thank you! I didn’t know about this tools’ existence. I don’t do much gaming, but when I do I’ll definitely try and set this up (and compare).

Thanks for sharing this @ericmarceau First time hearing about gamescope was from @Halano Would you buy a ( Steam Machine )?

But to be honest I have not had any chance to game in several months. I miss playing Arc Raiders and Squad. It’s one dual-boot reboot away, but I’m always afraid to get into it unless I can truly get into it.

I’m retired now, don’t work from home, so I spend a LOT of time gaming. Nearly 7500 hours in theHunter: Call of the Wild, which runs better in Linux than it ever did in Windows, 2200 hours in American Truck Simulator, 800+ hours in Lord of the Rings Online, and recently installed The Bard’s Tale Trilogy because I enjoyed Might & Magic back in the 80’s. All the games are through Steam and all run great on my Mint box.

Nexuiz, FTW - with nouveau!

But, WAIT - there’s more:

Goodness, so much more:

Gaming on the Linux is wicked!

It is indeed. I’ve got over 500 games in my Steam library, most of those shared from a family member using Windows, though about two dozen are games specific to me. Very seldom has there been a game that won’t run on my Mint machine.

Also in the context of gaming: recently switched from Nvidia to AMD graphics. How easy AMD cards are compared to Nvidia (on Linux).

I’ve been on an AMD CPU/GPU combo for the past five-ish years, with most of that time spent on Linux (the beginning I was dual-booting Atlas Windows). It really is quite the difference to the Intel/Nvidia combo (saying this b/c I frequently am troubleshooting my wife’s laptop with that combo).

I’ll do my best to stay on that combo as long as I can, it’s served me well so far!

I keep hearing whispers about nvidia cards being difficult, but I’ve run two of them in my primary Mint desktop, and for the most part have never had any issues. I did have to drop back to an earlier driver to have some games work properly, but that was super easy to do and didn’t impact anything else on my system.

I’m not a gamer, myself, but with board makers, and distro builders, “deprecating” package builds that are no longer supported by the board makers, it would seem indicated the the Gamer Community needs to come together to create an independant repository of those driver release packages for “posterity”, thereby ensuring not only a recovery path for those in need, but also a means to “revive” old hardware that has been classified as “https://lesserpuariens.com/” (translated as “serve no further use”), but which can be given a second life with enough support for use by those less fortunate!

I thought I was being a bit facetious when I proclaimed Nexuiz. It’s, what, 20, 20-something years old? I love it so and it’s all I need: 10, 13 minutes of non-stop OMFG! It’s so fast and responsive and gets my heart going. I play to 60 on ‘you might win’ and 9 bots…so fun - all the fun! I started playing it again this past year (last year?) because there it was in a dump. HA!

I have a play station, too, somewhere; 1. Oh, and a Wii. One time, way back, my buddy Jon walked in as I was playing Tomb Raider, and he said, and I quote: “Oh, my, she’s got quite the swagger”.

@JohnWick - Most of my boxes ran nvidia since always and, like you, I never had any trouble. I built a few boxes with amd, though, and those were no trouble at all and ran very well. On this laptop I had trouble with nvidia, however. 1st time. It’s discrete but it’s pretty old and lame so I never bothered to fix it up, proper. I can’t even be botherd as nouveau is more than enough for me and I tweaked the run with Nexuiz so it runs very well even on the stock kernel. Full-tilt boogie.

I know the feeling… I still play Quake III Arena against bots  on my 15 year old desktop computer, on an old Radeon card. For me, that’s the fun - I still enjoy it like a kid.

I like to use ‘low gravity’ just because I am still 7.
