I’ll start: the idea that everyone needs to run the latest software. Sometimes boring and stable is better.
What’s your take?

I pretty much stay away from rolling releases, though I did love CachyOS when I tried it out. The most overrated thing in the Linux world right now in my opinion is Omarchy. Yeah, it’s neat, flashy, trendy, but I have huge reservations about the security of it.
You are right. And to be honest. I bought into the hype at first as well. Then I tried it out and wasn’t impressed.
A large chunk of what makes Linux so special is being able to setup your distro/DE/WM in your opinionated way. I think this goes against that satisfying DIY. Especially since important decisions are made for you like the theme, the keybinds, the default apps and how it all fits together. That’s a lot of trust to hand over to someone else’s script.
I do agree, but at the same time act like a total maniac and constantly keep everything up-to-date ![]()
A statement that due to being open source Linux can be bent/modified to anyone’s liking.
Windows replacement programs, Adobe PDFs are still not modifiable in Linux. Also Linux Gaming, There are still many games that you can’t run on Linux, Diablo4 for example, so yeah both those are over rated.
I resemble that remark! ![]()
I also think that Linux is overbuilt at times. In fact, fairly soon I am going to take a look at FreeBSD or one of it’s live derivatives and see if it’s reasonably usable from a live image. If it can browse the Web with a semi-current Web browser and come equipped with one or two text editors, a very small expectation, that will probably be sufficient for me to run one of them live. If I find a suitable version I may even run it exclusively for at least a day and possibly write about it; stay tuned.
@Brian_Masinick Understand that, honestly if not for gaming and some “flair”, I’d downsize radically. Got a Void partition for experimenting a bit. Some people swear by BSD (not many though
), but they do exist! One of my close friends runs OpenBSD as a main system. Looking forward to reading what you come up with! Might even try it myself.
Now I’ve gotta do it soon! ![]()
It is, I have it as a VM and it works well. For web browsers you get what’s in the BSD repo which as far as I can tell is the current available. BSD comes without a desktop environment so you’d have to install one that you want. So there’s your chance to learn. ![]()
Wayland.
Being a l33t haxor, or, whatever.

THose all tie for 1st to me, so, that’s one.
