You are installing a Desktop environment on the VPS?

Excuse me please, I am not so advanced. It is about Hostinger vps, Firstly I chose to install on the vps one of their predefined os, availed o their web site, Ubuntu 22.04, and then I accessed their terminal, and then I sudo apt install ubuntu-desktop in order to access the gui version of Ubuntu.startx Have I done something wrong? Thank you.

It looks like you took the correct steps to install the Ubuntu desktop. Nice! However, there are some considerations when installing a graphical interface on a VPS, especially on a web hosting service. The issue you’re encountering usually stems from the VPS environment, which doesn’t typically have a GPU or graphics/display hardware.

Thank you very much @hydn
The answer from vps stuff:

“Currently, our VPS (any plan) doesn’t have GPU and doesn’t support GPU acceleration.”

Excuse me please, I am not so advanced. This means I can not use the gui version of any linux distribution, or any web browser like Firefox or Google Chrome? Thank you.

No worries. So you can’t access GUI (desktop enviornment via SSH or terminal) but you can install and run desktop if you use a remote desktop software like:

  • NoMachine
NoMachine offers fast, secure, and high-quality remote desktop access, with support for media streaming, file transfer, and device redirection.
  • TightVNC
A popular open-source VNC-based tool for remote desktop control. It’s lightweight and works well over slow connections.
  • TigerVNC
Another VNC option, TigerVNC focuses on performance and extended features, including support for high-resolution displays and encryption.
  • X2Go
A remote desktop solution primarily for Linux, X2Go is based on the NX protocol and offers fast, efficient remote sessions with full desktop functionality.
  • Remmina
An open-source remote desktop client designed for Linux, Remmina supports multiple protocols like VNC, RDP, SSH, and more, offering flexibility for different environments. (I use this one)

Examples:

So it can be setup but the VPS won’t have the capability locally so you have to access using a solution like above instead of trying startx via terminal which won’t be possible.

Hostinger vps stuff answer:

Since servers don’t have any graphic cards (GPU) you can install Ubuntu connect via RDP, install Chrome.

They added:

Servers don’t have any (GPU)

At the moment, we offer self-managed VPS hosting services, so you are responsible for all the work inside the server. This provides unparalleled freedom and flexibility.
