Re-Install help

Hey all I need some help reinstalling Linux. About a year ago I installed Pop!OS onto my Windows 10 desktop and it’s safe to say it was kind of a failure. Applications are slow to load or don’t load at all, most processes are sluggish and laggy, my terminal keeps throwing me errors that I don’t know how to fix, and most importantly the whole OS keeps crashing every so often for no reason. I tried the refresh OS option which worked for a time, until I reinstalled my programs and the problems started up again. I should have been a lot more careful with this whole thing and I decided it’d be a great idea to wing it with 0 experience based on a couple of tutorials instead of actually sitting down and studying how to do this right. So, I’d like to start over and try to get this thing running properly. My main question is how do I fully wipe everything on the PC so I can start from scratch? I’m talking fully deleting the OS and starting again fresh.

Hi,
select “use entrie disk” oder “rease/delte disk and install …” during installation and the installation will erase your hard disk.

It should look something like this:

ok got it. I’m wondering does pop-os have a similar setup screen? I can’t seem to remember if it asked me to use the whole disk on startup.

I don’t know but regular all Installers have this function

I had a somewhat similar experience with Pop!_OS when I ran it for a few months (strange bugs). If you are new to Linux, then…

  • Linux Mint is often the top choice for beginners. The installation is easy and user-friendly. Start here.

  • Ubuntu is another good one with a huge community and tons of documentation, so if you run into any issues you can troubleshoot easier. (My recommendation). Start here.

  • If you want something that’s more Windows like out-of-the-box then Zorin OS is worth a look. Start here.

Ultimately, it’s up to you, it’s just not surprised to hear about issues with Pop!_OS.

All of these, including Pop!_OS should offer the erase/delete entire disk option.

I concur with @hydn recommending LinuxMint. It is very stable and if you go with the default Cinnamon desktop you’ll find it very comfortable coming over from Windows. The LM installer definitely has a “use entire disk” option during install.

I’ve been using it for 3-4 years after ditching Windows but retaining a multi-boot setup and using Windows for gaming.

Feel free to reach out if you go with LM; happy to help you with some tips.

That’s relieving to hear that I wasn’t the only one. I’m gonna try this again Sunday see how it plays out

I actually do use Lint on my laptop, I switched at about the same time I switched my desktop. Funny thing is, Lint works & runs perfectly on there, which is why I wonder as to what I did wrong on my desktop. I wanted to make it a gaming PC which is why I really wanna keep POP.

I’ve got LM running on my main desktop, my media server, my laptop (a former Chromebook), and my DAW. It’s running near flawlessly on those.

I also have a couple light gaming machines I bring out when family visits. On those two, I recently installed CachyOS. It is Arch-based, is targeted for gaming, and is getting very good performance reviews. As I gain more experience with them, I’ll report findings.

Sounds awesome. We would love to hear your feedback and impressions of it.

Sorry I may be a bit later in the party in here… btw the situation for now is POP!_OS is being a bit outdated, they are still in 22.04 release, there’s not an updated version final release date yet, so, for now, I don’t suggest using POP!_OS, as soon its installer from my POV is one of easier I saw.

As some other suggestion you can install some Linux distribution such as Linux Mint, it’s installer is simpler and with gui as well. I suggest avoid vanilla Ubuntu.
