A System update glitch

Hi

I got a system update and all my desktop icon disappeared.
All works fine otherwise.
UM 26.04.1 LTS, here.

p.s.
Trying to add them back doesn’t work (clicking right from the menu). Adding to Panel does work (but not my preferred way)
Clicking right to get the desktop option doesn’t work either.

Caja issue (I guess)

Probably did already, but check MATE Tweak and make sure desktop icons are still turned on, updates sometimes flip that.

If it’s on, try running caja -n --force-desktop from a terminal. I

You tried gsettings where you set org.mate.background show-desktop-icons true.

Log out and back in after each attempt.

That happened to me sometime back and what fixed it for me was opening MATE Tweak and re-checking the box Show Desktop Icons. For some reason after an update that setting was changed.

Yes. Tried the Mate Tweak. I unchecked and re-check. No result.

Your terminal line tells me :
Command ‘caja’ not found, but can be installed with:
apt install caja
So…
Just saw that I got the Gnome Files instead…

hmm, Caja is what usually draws desktop in MATE, so with it gone there’s nothing to put the icons there. Maybe the update removed it and pulled in Nautilus.

Try to run sudo apt install caja, then log out and back in, see if they show up.

You can check the logs in /var/log/apt/history.log to see what that update removed, if related or not.

All logic…but you’re into it sometime you don’t think it through
So
I re-installed Caja
Made it Preferred in Control Center
re-boot
got the desktop as it was before the update
and.. even with those launcher I was trying to add before doing the above (so deleting the duplicates now)
Thanks guys.

Awesome. Glad you are back in flow.

I am under ‘any new version’ updates
So… this probably due to the fact that something related to Caja was ‘lost’ into the road toward 26.10; hence the update falling back to Files by default.
My view as a non-techie…
