Commodore Callback 8020 Is a Linux Phone Built to Block the Web
Commodore’s new Sailfish OS flip phone blocks browsers, social media, email, and work apps by design, with pricing starting at $499.
Commodore has introduced the Callback 8020, a new Linux-based flip phone running Sailfish OS, following a rather interesting concept: digital-detox restrictions rather than full smartphone freedom.
Interesting concept. Most “digital detox” phones end up being either too limited or not practical enough for everyday use, but this seems to be trying a different approach by keeping essential apps while intentionally blocking web browsers and social media.
I’m curious how successful that model will be in practice. A lot of people want fewer distractions, but at the same time they still expect modern convenience. Sailfish OS is also an unexpected choice, which makes the device even more interesting from a Linux perspective.
The biggest question for me is whether users will see enough value to justify the price point.
I would think concerned parents that want their kid to have a phone to stay in contact, but no Internet/social media access would be the biggest target, $500 bucks is a bit pricey for that.
I agree with the “pricey” characterization! $300 would be much more in line.
