XorMon: open source, on-prem monitoring for pretty much your whole stack

XorMon is an on-premises infrastructure monitoring and capacity planning platform from Xorux, which some of you in the IBM Power and storage world probably already know. It’s new to me.

What it covers

According to the project, it natively monitors 154 technologies without middleware or custom connectors. A quick sample:

  • Servers and virtualization: Linux, VMware, Proxmox, KVM, XCP-ng, Nutanix, Hyper-V, IBM Power, Solaris
  • Storage: NetApp, Dell EMC, Pure, HPE, Hitachi, IBM, Ceph, TrueNAS
  • SAN/LAN: Cisco, Broadcom, Aruba, Juniper, Palo Alto, F5
  • Backup and tape: Veeam, Commvault, NetBackup, Rubrik, Cohesity
  • Databases: PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server, MongoDB, Db2
  • Cloud and containers: AWS, Azure, GCP, Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift
  • Out of band: iDRAC, iLO, XClarity, Cisco UCS, Supermicro BMC

Features that stand out

  • Correlates metrics across layers on a single timeline, so you can see the VM, the datastore, the array and the fabric side by side
  • Automatic topology discovery and dependency mapping
  • Predictive capacity analytics (storage growth, CPU saturation, backup windows running long)
  • Xbot, a built-in AI assistant you can ask questions in plain language about your environment and alerts

Licensing

The good news for this crowd: XorMon is released under GPL v3. The free edition has no registration and no time limit, but it does have per-device limits, so it’s aimed at evaluation and smaller environments (homelabs included). The install also comes with a 3-month unrestricted trial license. If you need more, an Enterprise support contract removes the device limits and unlocks extras like Grafana integration, OpenTelemetry, the REST API and topology.

Getting it running

It deploys on Linux, as a VMware OVA, on Hyper-V, or with Docker. There’s also a live demo if you just want to poke around first.

Anyone here running XorMon, or LPAR2RRD/STOR2RRD before it? Curious how it compares to what you’re using now, whether that’s Zabbix, Prometheus + Grafana, Checkmk or something else. And if you spin it up in a homelab, post some screenshots!
