Windows 11 adoption

Why I use and will stick to Linux:

Windows 10 just very quietly got another year of free support - but why?

If you’re still running Windows 10, Microsoft has some good news: it has extended the free Extended Security Update program for consumers by one full year. Here’s everything you need to know.

Reason #1 is that the company really, really does not want to anger its OEM partners, who are already struggling with the near-certainty of plummeting PC sales as the AI-fueled RAM shortage drives prices sky-high, with no signs of slowing. - zdnet June 26, 2026

Upgrade Fail? An Estimated 1 Billion PCs Are Still Running Windows 10

It’s unclear how many Windows 10 users took advantage of Microsoft’s extended support program, and how many PCs are a security nightmare waiting to happen.

During a recent earnings call, Dell COO and Vice Chairman Jeffrey Clarke said that the transition from Windows 10 to Windows 11 is proceeding at a slower pace than previous OS upgrades. “We have about 500 million [PCs] capable of running Windows 11 that haven’t been upgraded. And we have another 500 million that are four years old that can’t run Windows 11.”
It was rather optimistic of Microsoft to expect every Windows 10 user to switch to Windows 11, even though it has provided more than a decade of support. (After all, approximately 3% of global users are still on Windows 7.)
