Hello! I switched from MacOS to Linux about 2 years ago with a 1 year switch to WIndos just so that I could get my hands used to using the cntl key instead of the splat key. Got fed up with paying too much for software hand having to go to the command line to get anything done. It was tough at first, but with the help of AI answering all my dumb questions and a bunch of tutorials, I’m getting the hang of it. I’m on Ubuntu using Studio and it rocks coming from a design geek perspective. Learning how Krita and Inkscape work and finding that though it’s taking some adjustment, they are just as powerful as Adobe software with the right plugins.
Welcome to the forum @2re. Regarding Ubuntu Studio these topics may interest you:
Welcome @pseudokoder !
It looks like kernel, driver, graphics subsystem and similar development might suit your aspiration!
Welcome @pseudokoder !
Given the current context of our reality, I think the term “boldly” is being misused here.
You have taken the time to look around you, to grasp the realities of
-
an unstable world,
-
a world where much of that change is technological, and
-
realize that the only survival tactic is to “tinker” with the technology that is embedded to control and manipulate that future world,
to both
- understand it … and
- to prevent it from forcing unwanted life choices!
You have chosen a path which, to many of use here, would seem to be the only sane path going forward!
You are to be commended!

Hey I am a Metaphysician and i took a programming associate dregree in 2001! lol so i just plug along until i figure it out! i have always thought Linux was the best poop around so i am taking it a few steps further and installing it on one of my windows machines…really tired of all their unnecessary bloat and prying eyes!! So happy to be here! Please remember when engaging with me that i am a total newbie… i understand how things work on a computer and logic but i do not know linux ![]()

Welcome aboard! @TigerLily The logic and problem-solving from programming carries over to Linux as it rewards that “plug along until I figure it out” mindset.
Since you’re coming from Windows and want to ditch the bloat, a couple things that’ll make the jump smoother. If you haven’t picked a distro yet, Linux Mint, Zorin or Ubuntu are the usual newbie-friendly picks. Zorin especially feels familiar coming from Windows.
Try them on a live USB or VM first before you wipe anything.
And don’t sweat the “I don’t know Linux” thing. Nobody did at first. Ask questions here as dumb as you think they are, that’s literally what the forum is for. Our manifesto here is:
- we welcome before we judge.
- we ask before we assume.
- we share what we learn.
- we leave the door unlocked.
–- every question is a doorway.
- beginners shape our future.
- members shape our community.
–- source over secrecy.
- patience over points.
- curiosity over correctness.
–- the terminal is patient.
- so are we.
Glad to have you!
Hi everyone, I am a Linux beginner and have been trying to install the Zorin OS as my OS to replace Window 11.

If you get stuck with the Zorin install you can ask for help in the Help & Support forum.

Hi, I’m pretty new to Linux. Though I’ve tried some of the flavours back in my college days, that was like a couple of decades ago. But now I see that certain Linux distros have become genuinely much easier and useful (and not to mention cheaper) than Windows. So I’m still kinda in transition.
I’m using Fedora on Plasma for my personal media+gaming+server desktop, and Mint on Budgie on my work laptop.
AMA!
Hi @aeskay2021 and welcome to the community! How are you finding your transition from Windows to Linux so far? Any showstopping issues you’ve run into?
Welcome to the forums @aeskay2021
Speaking of Fedora, KDE and gaming, have you already tried Bazzite?:
My name is Jim i am retired and build computers on the side using new and used parts. I have always used Windows even when I worked as a network admin. I am thinking of making the switch to Linux because Microsoft is just getting out of hand with the data collection. Although I really don’t see anyway around it. Basically you walk down the street and at every traffic light there is a camera. Also I am just curious about using Linux. I am currently trying to decide on a distro.
Welcome to the forums @Jamagan
You have a lot of fun ahead in finding the distros and DE’s that best match your requirements and taste. You can find distro hopping/finding related reading here: distros

Feel free to share your journey with us along the way.
Welcome, Jim! If interested, there are a few guidance, advice, suggestion links offered in the earlier post
Hope some of those will help you navigate to a “safe harbour” in Linux land!

I’ve been around the community for a while – infrequently at times but more so now. I noticed this thread today and realized I’ve not posted here to “introduce” myself. (My first exposure to the community pre-dates this thread.
)
I worked as an electronics tech in the US Navy (1977-1980) and later in civilian life. I started playing with micro computers in 1982 with a Commodore VIC 20 and built an 8K RAM (yes, K) giving me a whopping 13K of memory space! Taught myself 6502 assembler and BASIC and loved coding and later moved to an SX-64. For those old enough to remember the magazine, in April 1986 Compute’s Gazette published a program I wrote “Directory Filer”.
I still remember purchasing my first “real PC” in 1987 with a grayscale monitor (oooohhh) and a 60MB hard drive (aaahhh). After that one, though, I went to building my own and have every since.
I left hardware and landed my first coding job in 1987. Worked there for a couple years and then move to another company (then ADP Dealer Services, later CDK Global) and worked there until retiring in 2019. My career was pretty much DevOps before that label came into fashion. I did a lot of coding but I also built and administered systems. Most of my time was spent on the Microsoft stack (C#./NET, SQL Server, IIS) building apps, databases, ETL, but also some Linux CentOS (early days) and even an iOS app for our field engineers. My hardware background was very valuable when it came to integrating barcode scanners and other devices into our software.
Not long after retiring, I went totally Linux in my home and never looked back.
Welcome to the forums @IronRod I know you looked familiar! ![]()
Nice intro. Welcome aboard properly. Building the apps and then having to keep the systems they ran on alive teaches you things you don’t get from staying in one lane.
There will be times that each of us step away and other times when we more actively participate, as time and life allows.
The tech space, and life in general for us adults can be so hectic and unpredictable! We found out our neighbor next door of just 3 weeks died last night. RIP. ![]()
Stay safe, everyone! There are no requirements here, not for members, moderators, or admins. No judgment. Hopefully this space serves as an enjoyable getaway when life allows. Somewhere we can hang out and mingle for a change of pace:
