I have never seen or heard of it, nor do I know why you need an ‘invite’ link.

Good catch, I have an account there.
Most likely they are being inundated with SPAM, bots and automated traffic. 
Shows, 2400 signups in the past week, so I’m guess they temporarily disabled signups. Desperate times calls for desperate measures. I do not wish that type of automation on any forum/community. 
I can see they are using Cloudflare, but not effectively.
As well as using hcaptcha because everyone is still passing right through their current Cloudflare setup:
So he/she can just keep checking back, for if or when, they open signups again.
