Ubuntu 16.04 LTS is peak Unity Desktop, it’s been EOL since 2021, but I use ESM which is EOL since April 2026, then I paid for the Legacy add on Legacy Ubuntu Pro, so my Ubuntu 16.04 is supported by Security until 2031, Whenever I get bored with GNOME, I can always boot into Unity
I think there’s a lot of love for Unity now (and I get why!), but I remember it not being liked so much in the actual days… And after it had been replaced by GNOME people could start complaining about GNOME and how they wanted back Unity ![]()
Have you checked out Ubuntu Unity? It’s Unity 7 on a modern Ubuntu base. It’s still being actively maintained and improved upon.

I’ve tried Ubuntu Unity 24.04, but it still gets stuck with Software Rendering like Debian 13 MATE![]()

Ah of course, that’s a shame. Any way, I think it’s pretty cool to see a project revived like that!

The security support period is still long, 5 more years before totally EOL in 2031, my machine remains safe until 2031
