It is funny it seems like the dual boot is the first place people new to Linux go to! I did the same thing, I felt unsure about totally giving up windows since I didn’t know how to use Linux as well in comparison. I think a VM just to get a little familiarity before the dual boot is a great suggestion! But I will say, VMs are definitely slow in comparison to a bare metal install. So if you do try that out, keep in mind the system will probably feel a lot more responsive once you get to your dual boot. And also, if you test the waters with a VM, it most likely won’t be utilizing that nvidia gpu the way your windows install is unless you specifically give the gpu to your vm. From my memory, the options for doing that weren’t super great last time I was virtualizing on windows. And one more thing since I mentioned the gpu, I’m not sure if Ubuntu (or any linux distro) is going to come out of the box with Nvidia drivers. There are drivers (I use them on my system for my gpu) but you’ll probably have to get those installed and make sure your system isn’t using the generic drivers. Otherwise, your gpu won’t be utilizing all of it’s capabilities! I agree with hydn’s suggestions though, hope this extra little bit of info helps make the ride a little smoother. Ubuntu is a great system, and it was my first permanent Linux daily driver. Since you are into DevOps and cloud check out Mischa Van Den Berg on youtube. He is a self taught DevOps engineer and I think he does a really good job explaining DevOps stuff as well as Linux fundamentals. He’s created a free 8 hour Linux fundamentals course, specifically built to lay a foundation for DevOps. I think the free course is really good and really thorough. He also runs a career accelerator program for people looking to get into DevOps. Be warned, there is a LOT of marketing for this program trying to convince you to join lol but I think the free resource is still really valuable. Good luck! Oh btw, best advice I can give (i’m still a newbie) is get comfortable with the command line, it will be worth it!
