Welcome to linuxcommunity.io! Whether you’re brand new to Linux or a seasoned veteran, you’re in the right place.
There are no dumb questions here. We all started somewhere, and the best discussions often come from someone asking what others were too shy to ask.
What This Forum Is
We’re a community of Linux enthusiasts, sysadmins, hobbyists, and the curious. Not tied to any product, service, or distro, just a space where people who love Linux can mingle, chat, and help each other out. If you’ve ever wanted somewhere to talk Linux without the noise of social media or the gatekeeping of certain other places, this is it.
Who You’ll Meet Here
Our members range from people running their first live USB to 30-year veterans who’ve forgotten more about Unix than most of us will ever learn. Everyone is welcome at any level. Some of us write code, some of us run servers, some of us just like a clean desktop and a fast boot time. All of that is valid.
Say Hello
The quickest way to get started is to introduce yourself. Tell us a bit about who you are, what distro you’re running, or what brought you here. No need to overthink it, just say hi.
Or if you’d prefer, jump straight in with a new topic. Post in whichever category fits best, and if you’re not sure, post anyway. We can always move it.
Ways to Jump In
Not sure where to start? Here are a few things members do here regularly:
- Distro hopping? Refer to our Best Linux distros for desktop and for servers.
- Share what you’re working on, a homelab, a config, a script, a project
- Ask a question, no matter how basic or how deep
- Post a screenshot of your desktop and tell us what you’ve tweaked
- Share what’s in your
/etc/fstab, your.bashrc, or your favorite one-liner - Recommend a tool, a distro, or a YouTuber that taught you something
- Just lurk and read, that’s perfectly fine too
You can also Search for a topic, browse our Categories.
Distro & DE Groups
Join a group for your distro or desktop environment of interest: @Arch @Debian @Fedora @MATE @Ubuntu. Or you can start one! Just send us a message with the distro or DE that you would like to lead.
How This Place Works
A few things worth knowing:
- As you participate by reading, posting, and engaging, you’ll automatically earn higher trust levels that unlock new abilities like adding images, editing wiki posts, and accessing private groups. Read more about how that works here.
- Take a quick look at our community guidelines so you know what to expect and what we expect from each other:
Community Rules & FAQ - We also have a Code of Conduct that applies to everyone, members and staff alike.
What to Expect
This forum has a rhythm. The Weekly Forum Summary recaps what’s been active. There are recurring threads where members share desktops, configs, and project updates. New articles and guides drop regularly. Moderation is light, the vast majority of our active members are kind and helpful, so we rarely need to step in.
You won’t find aggressive gatekeeping, RTFM responses, or word-policing here. If that ever changes, we want to hear about it.
Want to Give Back?
You don’t have to do anything but show up and be yourself. But over time, you might find yourself answering someone else’s question, posting a project in Showcase , or writing a guide that helps the next person. That’s how the community grows, one helpful reply at a time.
