Erratic periodic event where there is no recognition of networking hardware at boot time

/etc/modprobe.d/atl1e.conf`

Are comments allowed in those files, lines starting with “#”?

sure, you can add comments in a .conf file, cat /etc/modprobe.d/atl1e.conf

options atl1e ps_enable=0
# this is a test pavlos suggested, blame him
# trying to keep the nic from deep sleep
# 23 may 2026

Funny man! Showing your comedic side, I see!

I just like to add a reference to the URL of the suggestion post (yours).

for example, this is the iwlwifi.conf, plenty of comments. One long line with continue \

# /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf
# iwlwifi will dyamically load either iwldvm or iwlmvm depending on the
# microcode file installed on the system. When removing iwlwifi, first
# remove the iwl?vm module and then iwlwifi.
remove iwlwifi \
(/sbin/lsmod | grep -o -e ^iwlmvm -e ^iwldvm -e ^iwlwifi | xargs /sbin/rmmod) \
&& /sbin/modprobe -r mac80211

modinfo /usr/lib/modules/6.8.0-111-generic/kernel/drivers/net/ethernet/atheros/atl1e/atl1e.ko

filename: /usr/lib/modules/6.8.0-111-generic/kernel/drivers/net/ethernet/atheros/atl1e/atl1e.ko
license: GPL

author: Atheros Corporation, <[email protected]>, Jie Yang <[email protected]>
name: atl1e

and modinfo -p shows only 4 parms which means ps_enable should not work.

tx_desc_cnt: Transmit description count (array of int)
rx_mem_size: memory size of rx buffer(KB) (array of int)
media_type: MediaType Select (array of int)
int_mod_timer: Interrupt Moderator Timer (array of int)

Any chance you can email the authors?

add this option in the atl1e.conf

options atl1e aspm=0
options atl1e enable_aspm=0
options atl1e ps_enable=0
# this is a test pavlos suggested, blame him
# trying to keep the nic from deep sleep
# 23 may 2026

Issues with deep sleep arise when the Ethernet card enters a power-saving mode and fails to wake up (dropping your connection or logging a “link down” error on resume).

Often due to PCIe ASPM (Active State Power Management) hence the first line tells it not to enable aspm. the line could also be: options atl1e aspm=0 (added it at the top).

For my own kernel version,

When you say email the authors, do you mean the developers at the email in that output?

If so, what am I asking about, or asking them to do? Sorry, but not sure what I am contacting them for.

Is this for the new NIC that will be inserted into the MB (not yet purchased/installed), and not for the existing network functionality included with the MB?

All these options are for the existing atheros nic.

We have no idea what driver the new card will have.

Note sure if the authors will reply but you can point to this thread. Basically, we have this m/b and the onboard nic does not work from a cold boot. um24 detects atl1e as the driver and we don’t know if the nic is in deep sleep or not. Any suggestions? thanks.

Thank you. We’ll see what they come back with.
