Not only did I miss it, it is actually directly available on my TrueNAS app community repository!
At some point I had casually browsed the catalogue and seen a few apps like this but I would say the name does not do it justice.
Installation was a breeze and it is now actively uploading and processing my phone libraries.
Thanks for the article. Enlightenment ensues.

I was mind-blown that I’d missed finding Immich. Then I remembered this (which I could not find until someone on /r/selfhosted shared):
I asked my friend @shybry747, How come he never told me about it?! Looking for someone to blame, I guess. ![]()
But it’s all on me. Will be seriously looking into using Immich shortly.
If anyone here has used it before, tips are most welcome!
In the seemingly never ending quest of corporate decoupling, this is one of my last requirements! I’ve been using / trying various solutions to backup full res images from my phone but never really happy with any of them. Maybe this is the one?! I’m excited to try it out, thanks for sharing.
You could be in luck. It supports RAW but also allows download of original res if you choose to do so in network settings.
YMMV
