I don’t think I’ve put in my introduction yet. Sorry about that!
I go by Jaymo on online circles. Jaymo is my childhood nickname, Chicago is my favourite band, thus jaymo_chicago.
I switched to Linux from Mac in 2023 after about 5 years of Mac, and before that Windows. Windows 10 was the last straw for me and Windows 11 is ABSOLUTELY not my cup of mate so I’m happy here. Still being relatively new (I consider 3 years to be new since I’m still discovering things), I’m still distro-hopping a bit and discovering new and interesting things with Linux. (I do say I’m getting tired of distro-hopping, but next week I may find something new and interesting I want to try. Oh well!)
The first time I settled on a distribution for more than 1-2 months and actually joined a Linux online community was in 2024 when I used Ubuntu MATE. This group of people has been extremely friendly, helpful, supportive, and welcoming and I am honoured now to be a part of that group, over here. I of course switched off Ubuntu MATE when I wanted to try something new, but would come back to Ubuntu MATE, and I did this throughout the later half of 2024 and throughout 2025, and a bit this year as well (2026, if reading in the future).
Nowadays, I’m on Void Linux with Niri and the Noctalia shell, as I’m interested in testing out Wayland and seeing how a non-systemd distro goes. It takes a bit of learning to learn some new commands when all you ever have used is systemd, however, I am starting to prefer runit. My computer is extremely fast, especially booting up, and this laptop only has 6GB of RAM.
I also have an Ubuntu 26.04 system with the MATE desktop installed in a VM (which does work quite well with my low RAM – a nod to the lightweight feature of MATE) and continue to enjoy playing around with it. I’m becoming less of a fan of the Ubuntu ecosystem in its current incarnation (just some of the decisions on the backend, rust coreutils, etc.) and running 24.04 LTS is too behind for me now. I’ve always been an LTS person but now am starting to appreciate a setup like Void – rolling release with the latest LTS kernel out of the box for more stability (in my opinion), and runit has much less overhead than systemd.

I used Ubuntu Mate years ago and considered it along with Mint. I think seeing all the positive posts on Reddit about Mint nudged me to try Mint Cinnamon.

Man, 82, use Linux either MX, Voyager, Zorin;
Why the different distros: reason the troubles with the printers of Brother.
Sometimes as of a sudden the printers (also Cano, (however less) probably after secret uodating there are difficulties.

Great to have you here! Love the origin of the username, Chicago is a solid pick.
The Windows 10 last straw thing hit home for a lot of us. And distro-hopping never really ends, you just hop slower over time. Then we end up DE/WM hopping also lol
Yes, you guys from the MATE Desktop crew have been a great addition to the forum, and I’m genuinely glad you’ve found your way over!
What has also been nice to see is that longtime members logging back in after the move are finding the same community we have been building here since 2022. Same tone, same structure, same general feeling that people can ask questions, share ideas, and take part without the place feeling chaotic or over-policed.
That has always been the goal. No matter the activity level, a forum where the culture comes from the members themselves, not from heavy-handed moderation or any one person trying to define it. The “community” is what gives it life. That’s why we’re fortunate to have you all here. You joined with the same positive mindset that keeps this place feeling like a real community.

@jaymo_chicago Welcome to the forum and your experiences. I’ve actually been to a couple of Chicago concerts over the years and with the vast array of Internet stuff I’ve seen several more of them.
I started computing while in high school in 1972. It led me to an education in Computer Science and a career in computing across several industries: automotive, telecommunications, finance and computer companies. While I was at a computer company, several friends who ironically landed at the same company I was at - Digital Equipment Corp, were chatting about Linux, which I had been reading about for around three years, so in 1995 I finally bought a home computer system and dual booted it with Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and Slackware, later upgrading the 3.1 to Windows 95. It didn’t take long for me to prefer Slackware and Linux, so I took that journey right through employment opportunities, using my UNIX and Linux experience to get good jobs across many types and sizes of business.
As a retiree I can now enjoy JUST Linux!

Hi All,
I’ve been working with Linux since the early Debian releases in the mid 90s and have used Linux almost exclusively as my go-to operating system for over 20 years. To say I’m an enthusiast is an understatement. That said, I’m always learning new things and every time I do learn something new, it solidifies my decision to stay with Linux.

Do you have a Linux distribution in mind?
In the working world Red Hat dominates in the USA; SUSE is a strong second and a leader outside of the USA.
