Hi, I’m pretty new to Linux. Though I’ve tried some of the flavours back in my college days, that was like a couple of decades ago. But now I see that certain Linux distros have become genuinely much easier and useful (and not to mention cheaper) than Windows. So I’m still kinda in transition.
I’m using Fedora on Plasma for my personal media+gaming+server desktop, and Mint on Budgie on my work laptop.

My name is Jim i am retired and build computers on the side using new and used parts. I have always used Windows even when I worked as a network admin. I am thinking of making the switch to Linux because Microsoft is just getting out of hand with the data collection. Although I really don’t see anyway around it. Basically you walk down the street and at every traffic light there is a camera. Also I am just curious about using Linux. I am currently trying to decide on a distro.

I’ve been around the community for a while – infrequently at times but more so now. I noticed this thread today and realized I’ve not posted here to “introduce” myself. (My first exposure to the community pre-dates this thread. 
)
I worked as an electronics tech in the US Navy (1977-1980) and later in civilian life. I started playing with micro computers in 1982 with a Commodore VIC 20 and built an 8K RAM (yes, K) giving me a whopping 13K of memory space! Taught myself 6502 assembler and BASIC and loved coding and later moved to an SX-64. For those old enough to remember the magazine, in April 1986 Compute’s Gazette published a program I wrote “Directory Filer”.
I still remember purchasing my first “real PC” in 1987 with a grayscale monitor (oooohhh) and a 60MB hard drive (aaahhh). After that one, though, I went to building my own and have every since.
I left hardware and landed my first coding job in 1987. Worked there for a couple years and then move to another company (then ADP Dealer Services, later CDK Global) and worked there until retiring in 2019. My career was pretty much DevOps before that label came into fashion. I did a lot of coding but I also built and administered systems. Most of my time was spent on the Microsoft stack (C#./NET, SQL Server, IIS) building apps, databases, ETL, but also some Linux CentOS (early days) and even an iOS app for our field engineers. My hardware background was very valuable when it came to integrating barcode scanners and other devices into our software.
Not long after retiring, I went totally Linux in my home and never looked back.

Nice intro. Welcome aboard properly. Building the apps and then having to keep the systems they ran on alive teaches you things you don’t get from staying in one lane.
There will be times that each of us step away and other times when we more actively participate, as time and life allows.
The tech space, and life in general for us adults can be so hectic and unpredictable! We found out our neighbor next door of just 3 weeks died last night. RIP. 
Stay safe, everyone! There are no requirements here, not for members, moderators, or admins. No judgment. Hopefully this space serves as an enjoyable getaway when life allows. Somewhere we can hang out and mingle for a change of pace:

Welcome Jim! I recognise the feeling of being overwhelmed with privacy concerns, but one thing to remember is that each step counts. Whether that be switching to a Linux distribution, adjusting privacy settings, or moving to a more private cloud solution—they’re all steps to more digital privacy and autonomy.

Absolutely! It’s amazing how much history and stories members here have. I was thinking about this just last night: For a small community we have soo many projects and scripts in the showcase area as well.
Will keep looking for ways to ensure new members can learn a bit more about the talent and experience of other members.
We probably need to buff the profile section to be able to carry a bit more details. More to come.

Started with Linux in 2000 but am a slow learner. The person that got me started (we will call him Snowman in ) Fl. He is a quick learner but to fast for me. So I manage to fumble my way around and crash more system than I can count. Not a young guy anymore but still trying. I’ll be 81 this year so it keeps me thinking.

Hi! I’m fairly new to Linux and just beginning to reacquaint myself with with the operating system. I used Suse a few decades ago and am eager to discover the best distros today. My main interests are photography, gimp and 2D design. Thanks
