The Story of NeoVim

Here’s another story about yet another text editor: NeoVim. Yeah, I think you see which “broken record” I listen to: the origins of various text editors.
Justin M. Keys provided organization and management to the excellent ideas created by Thiago De Arruda and yet another Vi editor emerged: NeoVim.

The Story of NeoVim (Neovim, nvim)

I keep an eye on the development of Neovim because it still has not reached all of the intended project goals after twelve years in existence, but it has fixed a few Vim defects along the way and it has been utilizing LUA as the configuration language of choice. As of Friday, June 19, 2026 the project has released Version 0.12.3, it’s solid as a day to day editor, still using Vim foundations, but piece by piece it’s replacing the Vim customization and plugins, based on LUA configuration tools and it’s going well despite the low version number.
