While reading the Fedora 45 thread I came across this snippet:
Fedora MATE-Compiz Spin (MATE 1.28.x): MATE 1.28 maintenance releases remain the most likely option unless MATE 1.30 reaches stable status before Fedora 45 freezes.
The Mate website hasn’t been updated since the release of 1.28 and the Github page does show a 1.29 release back in May though it doesn’t appear to be a major step above 1.28.2.
Curious if anyone out there has any insight on development of a 1.30 release.
Has to do with the fact that Martin has not done a complete handover of “control” of various account and web sites associated with Ubuntu MATE.

Me too. But after reading that post it got me to thinking about what might be next as there hasn’t been much coming out of the Mate camp for some time.
I just upgraded my mediacenter to UM 26.04.1
The systeminformation says Mate 1.28.2
but apt policy ubuntu-mate-desktop says something else. Could this be the rumoured 1.30 ?

Thom, where did you get your image for the UM 26.04.1? I’m feeling that I can’t put off doing the upgrade from 22.04.5 any longer.
I do not have an image of 26.04.1, it was an ‘in place’ upgrade using sudo do-release-upgrade
I do have an old 26.04 image however (the last alpha release). I used it to fresh install two laptops.
In the meantime I upgraded those two laptops to 26.10 which was a much smoother experience.
If you want to upgrade, skip 26.04.1 altogether.
Upgrade to 24.04 instead.
In case you end up on 26.04.1 you really want to upgrade to 26.10

I never perform sudo do-release-upgrade!
I had one very bad experience that I never want to repeat. I prefer Live ISO in hand to deal with any possible outcomes.
You might consider to install Ubuntu-server and install the ubuntu-mate-desktop metapackage afterwards.

I do not have any ‘insight’ as such but here is what I know:
For MATE (and previously GNOME2) with X.YY versioning, even numbered YY releases are for general public with odd numbered YY releases being development versions. Distros don’t (usually) ship odd numbered versions. Current supported version is 1.28.z with 1.29.z being in development. Once the team decides it is time, it will be tagged 1.30. Given the lack of manpower and a (you-dont-have-much-choice) transition to GTK4 and/or Wayland, it may be quite some time before we have 1.30 release.
No, Martin has nothing to do with current development at MATE and 1.30 release. Devs have control over github, only the mate-desktop website probably needs handover.
No, that is the version of ubuntu-mate-desktop meta-package, controlled by UM team, not related to MATE DE itself.
As far as I can tell that won’t really result in a better installation because so many packages are using older (broken) versions. So even if you do as “clean” install like this you’re still going to be unable to edit menus, do screenshots, etc etc…
