HP Omen with Zorin 18.1 frequently hangs requiring a hard power off

Hey everyone! I’m hoping some gurus can point me in the right direction as I’ve been troubleshooting this for the past few weeks and I’m not able to make any headway on the issue.

My wife’s laptop is frequently (where frequently means a few times a week) hangs or freezes. But what does “hang” or “freeze” actually mean here?

  • The DE (Gnome) becomes completely unresponsive (the screen appears frozen)
  • If a video or video game was on the screen, the video output is frozen
  • If a video or video game was being played, the audio sometimes continues
  • The keyboard and mouse (external via USB or touchpad) are unresponsive (the mouse does not move and the device does not accept keyboard inputs)
  • The laptop is still connected (and responsive) via SSH (I can ssh into the laptop and try “things”)

The only “solution” is to hold the power button until the laptop fully powers off. Then power it back on. Then it will be “some time” before the issue happens again. Sometimes it will be a day, sometimes it will be a whole week.

Things I have tried that have no impact (meaning, it still requires the power button solution):

  • The alt+f2 keyboard shortcut for Gnome (keyboard inputs don’t work)
  • Switching to another TTY via ctrl+alt+f1|f2|f3 (keyboard inputs don’t work)
  • Closing the lid and reopening it (on and off the charger)
    • When the lid is opened again, the video is still “frozen”
  • Trying to logout via ctrl+alt+delete or ctrl+shift+escape (keyboard inputs don’t work)

Things I have tried via SSH to avoid the power button solution:

  • pkill -u danielle (the command hangs and the SSH session does not close)
  • sudo pkill X (to try to restart the X11 server. the commands “completes” but the X process remains in the ps -ef list)
  • sudo systemctl restart display-manager (the command hangs infinitely with no change)

What am I looking for? Ideally I’d like to prevent this freeze/hang completely as it’s quite frustrating for the both of us. If this is some kind of kernel bug/driver bug that I have to wait on, I’d like to know what I can do that doesn’t require holding the power button.

The common thread is nvidia-drm on the Blackwell 50-series cards with pageflip or flip-event timeouts, and processes going unkillable afterward, which lines up with your pkill and display manager restart hang.

Likely what you’re hitting, worth checking into. Next time it freezes, SSH in and run journalctl -k -f, then grep for “Pageflip timed out” or “Flip event timeout.”

If those show up, it confirms it’s the nvidia-drm bug rather than anything in your config, in which case subscribe to those upstream threads for the fix.

@hydn, thank you so much for this. I’ve read through the two links that you posted and I would definitely agree that the symptoms match quite closely. I had suspected that Nvidia was the culprit, but that was just a hunch (for biased reasons, not due to any hard evidence).

After a few instances of the issue, after rebooting, I ran sudo journalctl -b 1 > bootlog.yyyymmdd to save, what I think, is the previous boot logs. I’m not sure if those capture the -k flag or not, but I did go ahead and search each of those previous logs for your terms. I did not find any matching entries for these two commands: grep -i pageflip bootlog.* and grep -i flip bootlog.*.

However, looking at the two links, I saw the term nvidia-drm to be common. So I did: grep -i nvidia-drm bootlog.* as well, to see if anything stood out. What I did find was several of these entries (mostly occurring after a fresh boot, not near the hang/freeze):

The memory address (at least I believe that’s what it is) at the end of that log message is different each time the message appears and each boot. I did Google this error and found, in most cases, others just re-installed the Nvidia drivers. I’m not sure if that is the correct approach, but it is something that I have not tried yet as I’ve just been in evidence collection mode.

So I decided to take a look at what IS currently installed for Nvidia on this laptop. I ran the command: sudo dpkg --list | grep -i nvidia and this is the output:

I’m not sure why there are two 595 firmware packages installed. I believe the 590 packages are what was installed by Zorin when I installed the OS, as I don’t recall making any manual changes.

Apologies for the long ramble, let me get to my question. Should I go ahead and purge all Nvidia packages and install the 595.58.03 package and see if the issue persists? If so, what is the recommended way to do this correctly? My thoughts are to do:

sudo apt purge nvidia*
sudo apt autoremove
sudo apt install nvidia-driver-595-open

Or is there a better way to install these and target the right packages? While I’m comfortable with apt, I’m not comfortable with drivers and their dependencies. Any pointers are greatly appreciated.

Also, is there anything I can monitor for, be it in logs or system files or performance commands, that would help me “catch” this issue before it happens and issue some kind of restart/reset?

I ran into this working through an Nvidia issue on my main system. It is a different issue than you are experiencing but I have the same situation: both 595 and 590 packages are installed. Here’s a link referring to the dual package issue: Ubuntu packaging changes for 590+, branch and version locking for Debian/Ubuntu — NVIDIA Developer Forums. As noted there, it is an issue with how they changed the packaging. I have not removed either at this point as I am still investigating the issue.

In any case, a clear indicator in your specific situation is the fact video is frozen and audio (sometimes) continues. That, combined with the fact you can ssh in, clearly identifies the issue as a video freeze not a system freeze – again pointing at the Nvidia driver.

I am not familiar with specifics of Zorin but it is Ubuntu based (right?) so the following should work for it as it does for Linux Mint (also Ubuntu based).

  1. Do a backup (TImeShift, fsarchiver, *zilla, etc.)
  2. Check that there is no /etc/modprobe.d/ file that blacklists nouveau. Some Nvidia packages have done this in the past. If it is there, remove it so you can get nouveau after the reboot.
  3. Purge both Nvidia driver packages.
  4. Reboot – it will come up in nouveau.

Leave it with nouveau for a while to see whether the issue manifests again. It won’t be as performant for gaming but will work for video nonetheless.

At some point, you can just install the latest Nvidia if you choose to go that route. That will get rid of the dual package issue. But running on nouveau for a while would be informative as to whether it happens at all there compared to when running Nvidia.

Hey @IronRod, thanks so much for the response! I read through the link on Ubuntu packaging changes, this seems to explain why I would have multiple versions installed then. I did not realize that change had happened, so thanks for pointing it out!

Yes, Zorin bases off of the current Ubuntu LTS release, so Zorin 18 (or 18.1) bases off of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. In most of my other troubleshooting, I’ve been able to treat the system as if it was just Ubuntu and not see an adverse side effects.

I like the idea of testing on Nouveau only to see if there is something else, software or hardware, causing the issue. That being said, I also like the concept of pinning a specific driver version in the event that I find a driver fixes the problem, I shouldn’t have to worry about an update to the system affecting that (if I’m wrong on this, please correct me!). We don’t play “the latest games” so the only time I’d really need a new driver is in this type of situation, to patch a bug.

While I think through which direction I want to go, I went ahead and took a look at the /etc/modprobe.d/ folder and apt to see what options I do have and what changes I would need to make.

I tried a simple sudo grep -ri nou /etc/modprobe.d/ to see if nouveau showed up in any of the files in that folder. The grep returned 0 results. There is a nvidia-graphics-drivers-kms.conf file so I looked at the contents there and see this:

It doesn’t look like that is blacklisting nouveau so I think i’m good there. I will back up this file just in case.

I also took a look at apt to see if I already have the capability to pin a driver version, but doing a sudo apt update && sudo apt search nvidia-driver-pinning returned no results. So that suggests to me that I would need to step through the Ubuntu Nvidia Driver Install Guide, which was part of the link you sent. I think i would still purge all nvidia packages first, then step through this guide after a reboot.

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nouveau.conf. That is what I’ve seen in the past. I am not sure that is happening anymore; I haven’t seen it in a while. But it was worth checking in case it was hanging around from an earlier package.

Good luck on your investigation. Report back what you find; happy to help out. I have (unfortunately) learned a bit about about how the Nvidia drivers can be finicky. :wink:

That is a worthwhile consideration. If you have an older Nvidia card, it is worth identifying the latest Nvidia driver that specifically supports that card. You won’t gain anything going to a later driver if it does not specifically support your card. And it could introduce issues as they roll things forward or change things which your card is assuming to be a certain way.

Ok, it’s been about a week since I last updated this thread, so I want to take a moment to document what I’ve done since then.

TL;DR I have not experienced the problem since trying these steps. I hesitate to confirm resolved as the issue felt sporadic.

Taking @hydn’s and @IronRod’s advice, I decided to purge all of the installed Nvidia packages to get just the Nouveau drivers in place. To get that done on this machine, I ran: sudo apt purge nvidia*. It did seem to leave two other packages behind so I forcibly removed those with sudo apt purge linux-objects-nvidia-595-6.17.0-23-generic linux-signatures-nvidia-6.17.0-23-generic. I also checked dpkg for any rc nvidia packages with sudo dpkg --list | grep -i nvidia, which there were. I removed those with: sudo dpkg --purge libnvidia-compute-590:amd64 linux-modules-nvidia-590-6.17.0-20-generic linux-modules-nvidia-590-6.17.0-22-generic linux-modules-nvidia-590-open-6.17.0-20-generic linux-modules-nvidia-595-open-6.17.0-23-generic linux-objects-nvidia-590-6.17.0-20-generic. I probably could have left those, as I understand rc to mean there are residual configuration files only, but, I wanted this to be as clean as possible along with a clean slate for troubleshooting.

I then rebooted the laptop. It hung after showing the Zorin splash screen (never got to the desktop), so I powered off and back on again and got to a login screen. I tested launching a few games like Minecraft and Steam, and then used nvtop to see which GPU was being used. On that note, this is something that I should have explicitly mentioned before, the laptop has two GPUs. An integrated AMD GPU and a dedicated Nvidia GPU. nvtop showed me that only the AMD GPU was in use, and I believe it was the only one recognized as well.

I’m not sure if Nouveau can be toggled for GPUs like with Nvidia’s prime-select, but I did leave the laptop on with some processes running overnight and no hangs/freezes. Using the integrated GPU was a huge hit on performance that I wasn’t happy with, so I opted to re-install Nvidia drivers but with pinning.

To do that, I downloaded the cuda-keyring_1.1-1_all.deb package from the Nvidia instructions and installed it with sudo dpkg --install cuda-keyring_1.1-1_all.deb. I then ran sudo apt update and confirmed the presence of https://developer.download.nvidia.com in the list of sources.

I then ran: sudo apt install nvidia-driver-pinning nvidia-driver-pinning-595.58.03 nvidia-driver-open xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-595. I chose these packages based partly on Nvidia’s install instructions and comparing the previous dpkg --list command. These installed some dependencies (expected) and all were successful.

After a reboot, I wanted to test the same games (Minecraft + Steam games) to see if the Nvidia GPU was 1) being detected and 2) being used. Using nvtop showed me both GPUs, but the AMD GPU was still the only one being used!

To resolve this for Minecraft, which I use the MultiMC launcher to manage, I adjusted the Exec= line in the multimc.desktop file using menulibre to be: Exec=env __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 /opt/multimc/run.sh. This makes it so neither of us has to remember to right-click on the desktop icon and choose “Launch with Discrete GPU”. After making that adjustment, nvtop confirmed Minecraft was running on the Nvidia GPU.

Steam, on the other hand, was always running all games on the AMD GPU, regardless of what launch options I gave to the shortcut or the specific game. Then I remembered, I installed Steam with flatpak on this laptop. So I ran a flatpak update, which installed two packages: org.freedesktop.Platform.GL.nvidia-595-58-03 and org.freedesktop.Platform.GL32.nvidia-595-58-03. Games now run on the Nvidia GPU from Steam!

So far so good. Leaving Steam open overnight, or leaving a browser open all day, it doesn’t seem to matter. No freezes or hangs and the performance is good. I did consider installing nvidia-prime to get the prime-select command back, but, that wanted to uninstall several packages, and I’m not sure why. Now that things are working, I’m hesitant to poke the bear and break things.

If there is a way with Nouveau to detect another GPU and/or force the usage of that GPU, I’d love to know in case I need to do more testing in the future. Sorry for the long ramble, but, hopefully this can either 1) help someone else or 2) someone can tell me if I’m doing something very wrong where I’m causing my own issues.
