The IdeaPad is a cheap imitation of the ThinkPad. If that’s what she got, no wonder it was a dud. Most of their models are good, but their “affordable” models are not much better than Acer - except in one area - Acer has HORRIBLE console system firmware; to me Acer are only good for Chromebook or those who use only Windows - good luck to those people!

I had an Acer Aspire 5 Model A515/55. The performance was very good for the price; it was a nightmare figuring out how to get UEFI/EFI working with Linux; I did it, but when I did a firmware update, it rendered the whole thing unusable; I forgot my console password and their tech support never helped me past that, so i dumped it; I do like Acer with Chromebook systems; they seem to make the most of them and i don’t have to deal with their firmware in those cases so that’s why those work out - good price/performance and no firmware worries.

Oh yes, that is typically Acer indeed
A friend of mine had an Acer where bits and pieces were breaking off from the case. By the time he dumped it it had broken hinges and a flickering display, that means one half was flickering, the other half had coloured stripes and was dead. Not nice.
