Hello everybody! ![]()
I’ve been using Linux on and off for years, mostly dual-booting with Windows. Earlier this year, I finally made the switch full-time, and haven’t looked back since.
A while back, a friend who wasn’t particularly tech-savvy asked me which Linux distribution I’d recommend for someone coming from Windows. That got me thinking about building a quiz to help people find a distro that actually fits their needs and preferences.
After looking into the existing options, most of what I found was fairly short and simplistic, often overlooking important differences between distros and user profiles, or else full of technical jargon and unwelcoming for newbies. I also noticed a lack of options available in languages other than English.
So I decided to build my own. As these things tend to go, what started as a small side project turned into considerably more work than I’d anticipated. ![]()
The result is DistroQuest: a free Linux distro recommendation quiz that considers things like experience level, intended use cases, hardware, desktop preferences, and how much tinkering you’re comfortable with.
The goal isn’t to declare one distro objectively better than another, but to help people find something that makes sense for their particular situation. Building it also gave me an excuse to explore quite a few distributions I’d never tried (or even heard of).

Currently available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian. (BTW, welcome to contributions for additional languages.)
Would love to hear what you think, especially if you’re already familiar with a bunch of different distros. If you take the quiz, let me know what you get and whether you agree/disagree with the recommendations. Criticism, suggestions, and ideas for improvement all very appreciated! ![]()
