… and ALSO to you!
Hey ya’ll.. new to Linux.. I built a pc for $3k a few years back, had win 7 updated to win 10 on it. Worked great till the windows gods made a deal with the PC boys and tried to force the world to “upgrade”.. to say the least, so I decided to turn it into a media server running plexmedia server.. boy what a baptism by fire.. I FUBAR’ed it a few times, now I’m doing it again.. I played with dos and a few hundred games in the 90’s on a 286 machine, then played with a Apple 2SI.. lol.. upgraded to a Apple 630CD.. first experience with dial up.. graduated to a 386 with win 95, up the ladder we went.. I’m so tired of windows and the games they play. Now I have Linux Mint on the PC in my office, and the Plex server in my basement.. had issues with permissions, but everything seems to work till I go digging around.. so far so good.
Hey, I recently received a low-spec laptop as a backup computer, and I decided that this was a good enough reason to “get into” the world of Linux distributions, since it’s too underpowered for modern versions of Windows.

Great idea, and a warm welcome to you as well!
Hi, I’m Sandro from Tuscany, Italy. I have a degree in IT but didn’t work all my life as a programmer. I traveled and worked in other contries. Now I work as a peasant and goatherd in a small village. I use Linux Ubuntu since 2010 (I did never like windows.)
I use Ubuntu 24 and I think it is great. Since february I’m working at a software on my own. I worked hard and now I’m very close to have something functional. This is a rather complex application that I made from scratch. In the beginning it was written in Bash but then I decided to switch to Go. I studied it and now I really like it. During this last months I learned how to use the terminal (I use gnome-terminal). I learned almost eveything about how to manage inputs (both from the keyboard and from the mouse, it’s very easy) and how to write on the terminal using colors and formatting, and – most important – how to do it quickly. This is actually very easy, just write everything (lines with color, coordinates, styles…) in one single “echo” command, and in no time you will change all the terminal window even if you are using a lot of different styles. So, my software is a TUI, Text User Interface, because I always liked using the terminal. I’m almost finished with the first part of it and soon it will be ready.
The problem is that I’m good for some things but not good at all for others. I like programming but I am not experienced with the operating system and with some aspects of releasing a software. I never did this. I worked for a company and made parts of the software but I never released a software for the public.
I hope in this forum I can find people I can make questions to, even dumb questions. I need someone who helps me with some aspects of the software. Maybe in the next days I will post the first video of my software.
Thank you for reading.
Sandro

Welcome to our Linux community @goatherd
Hi, everyone. Mateus here.
I am currently an undergrad computer engineering student. I never cared much about the OS I use, until recently when I started expanding my knowledge about how computers work and started getting overwhelmed by the ammout of unnecessary stuff I notice when utilizing Windows (ignorance sure is a blessing). I am now looking for the right distro to start and I hope I can contribute to the community soon!
Welcome to the community @mateusbacral, we’re glad you’re here! ![]()
Greetings and a warm welcome to our forum community.
That’s not a bad choice either. I wasn’t too warm on it at first but I took a look the other day and it has a nice syntax and it promises security and reliability. Based on what the code looks like and the fact that Google relies heavily on it, I’d say that’s a strong endorsement.
Welcome to the Community, Sandro!
Are you specifically looking for assistance in building a “package” for delivery and installation?
Or are you looking for some technical insights and methods for extending your software’s functionality into OS-probing or OS-modifying in realtime?
Security concerns. Since there is some “evaluated” code inside my software, when I call os.Exec(“…”) to run external processes. The parameter is a string. I don’t know much about hacking. Some “hacker” could modify that string in the code…?
The other issue is about ownership. I would like to ask users to give a small donation if they like my “command”. So, I want my code to remain mine. To make source code public is nice, as long as I remain the owner of it.
And more, I don’t like the idea that other people have my command for an unlimited time. I would like to set an expiration time: after that time people has to update to a new version.
Hey eveyone,
I’m Ethen, a math undergrad, I like tech and I’m here to hide from calculus. I also want to learn how linux kernel work and how is it compatible with so many devices. Hoping for the best.
And I use Ubuntu.
Welcome to the community @ethen, we’re glad to see you here! ![]()
Hmm, a Mathematics undergraduate who is here to “hide” from Calculus! Could it be that you are a Computer Scientist in disguise? ![]()
A warm forum greeting to you in any case!
Wecome to the Community, Ethen!
… and here my older brother and I thought that they should be teaching calculus in grade 7 or 8, for a better understanding of the world around them !!!

It appears to have been a while since someone new joined. I have been a Linux user for many years. Taking the plunge as of recent. Rock Linux on my Laptop and now (3) Raspberry Pi 5’s. Building a cluster…see how it unfolds I guess. Nothing specific in the c works, just going to do what makes sense and build from there.
