Hi,
My name is Nigel and I live in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. I have been using Linux since the start of 1999. I’ve probably tried most of the different types of Linux over the years but have setttled on Mint for the last eight or nine years.
Welcome to the community @legin, great to have you join us! ![]()
hi @legin nice to have you join us! Also check out our groups. Feel free to revive any mint topics you would like to weigh in on.
Welcome to our community and our forum @ricleedom
Hey Emre here,
I’m a full-stack web developer from Turkey. I use TypeScript for work and Rust for personal projects. I’ve used Ubuntu servers from time to time, but 2 years ago I decided to switch to Linux for my main PC. I started with Pop!_OS, moved to EndeavourOS last year, and am now running CachyOS.
I love open source and its community. As a leftist, I find the idea of a global community contributing to a shared goal for everyone’s collective benefit amazing.
I’m also interested in music production, sci-fi, philosophy, and gaming.
I have an experimental HTTP framework written from scratch in Rust. I’ve also sent some small commits to various packages, and I would love to contribute to any project that helps people. Feel free to reach out!
Hi @mrcn Welcome to our community.
Checked out your website https://mrcn.tr/ really cool projects as well.
You are welcome to look around and add to any topics and discussions you find interesting. You can also share any future (or current) projects you are working on in the Showcase category.
Welcome to the community @mrcn, nice to meet you! ![]()
Using Linux since 1996

Hi @doc, You are very welcome here! Which Linux did you use in 1996?
Hi @Ldbennet and Welcome to LinuxCommunity.io!
Everyone will say “noooo!” to me, but just take a peek at LaTeX (pronounced “Lay Tech”.)
So it does say (and/or people do say) that LaTeX is good for typesetting mathematics, and everyone is right about that. And if you’re new to LaTeX and wanting to write mathematical stuff and/or use TikZ to draw pictures, there is a steep learning curve.
But if you don’t do the above, LaTeX can quite easily give you beautiful layout and font choices, and for doing that, the learning curve is not steep. (OK, there’s a couple of steps you need to take but they are short and a little bit steep). So it may look tricky at first but the possibilities are endless and the most important thing (apart from being free etc) is that there are trillions of examples you can just download and start using. It produces beautiful PDF documents but you can also produce postscript or DVI if you want.
LaTeX is a markup language and as such you can use a simple text editor for all your work, but you might have guessed (and welcome to the world of Linux) that there are superb fully functional free editors. Because I’m useless, I use TexStudio, there are others e.g. TexMaker.
There’s also something called Typst, which is similar but by no means the same as LaTeX. I haven’t tried this, but it looks quite sophisticated and easy to use but I can’t be bothered to learn it. (I think that makes me a bad person.)
Go on, ignore the nay-sayers, and take a look at LaTeX. Your beautifully written books will be beautifully typeset. And your publisher (should) be happy to take “raw” .tex files.
Let me know if you need help. ![]()
And I bet everyone is wondering what your books are all about. ![]()
Thanks for the suggestion @rogerp. I probably won’t jump in quite yet as I’m still getting used to the new system. But I appreciate the idea and will also pass it on to my husband who is a math man all the way! He’s considering making the leap to Linux now that I’ve forged the way. LOL
Anyone who does want to know what I write can see all my books at my website which is simply my name (the l stands for Laura) without the d and the usual dot com. That might seem mysterious, but I don’t know the rules for such things here and want to be respectful. And, after all, I do write a bit of suspense…
Wow! I love your website! If your husband is a mathematician I expect he’ll know about LaTeX.
I think this is correct:
Thank you!

Hello,
I started on Slackware and Redhat 4.0
Later followed : Debian, Mepis, Knoppix, Mandrake, Mint, All the Ubuntu’s and nearly everything on DistroWatch as well.
Now I stick with Ubuntu Mate ( Cupertino ) and Mint Cinnamon
Greatings.
Hey all! Hope this finds yall well.
I’m a househusband and recently found myself going down a tech rabbit hole.
I’m a bit new to tech stuff in general, though I decided to dive head first into it. I switched to Linux for the first time a few weeks back. I started with Mint for about 4 hours then moved straight into Arch + Hyprland and haven’t looked back since! (And only had to reinstall a handful of times!
)
Now I have parts coming in for my NAS / Media Server which when researching stuff about it, is actually how I found this site. Excited to learn going forward!
