Regarding 2 or 3 distributions that I recommend, I’d choose these for different reasons:
-
I LOVE using antiX, and it’s now my most frequently used distribution: my reasons: it has all of the things I need and not a lot of extra “junk”. It’s originally designed to be lean and efficient, suitable for aging hardware, but it’s recently been fitted with a combination of older and newer kernels to serve a broader community; it’s now my #1 distro.
-
a long time favorite in the OLD days was MEPIS; the last version of MEPIS was in 2011; the “MEPIS Lovers Community” eventually re-created themselves with MX Linux, assisted at first by anticapitalista of antiX with an early kernel; MX Linux and antiX share a few tools but they are distinct distributions; MX Linux features Xfce as a moderate sized desktop environment; it’s still efficient, but does consume more memory resources than antiX; these two get most of my regular attention in various forms and “custom respins”.
Slackware, Cachy OS and Endeavour OS are added to check on full desktop environments (right now KDE Plasma) and to familiarize myself with diverse packaging methods. Got them all down well enough for casual maintenance AND installing my own additional packages, so that’s enough to “get the job done”.
