Doesn’t Firefox’s free VPN make at least browsing in Firefox behind another layer of encrypted safety? It may not protect the rest of the machine, but infecting a machine through firefox just got more difficult.

I don’t think that using a VPN has any bearing at all regarding infecting your system via browser. All it does is ensure the privacy from point of infection source to your browser. Because of that privacy tunnel, your ISP cannot even scan the packets to apply their own normal protection services, if available.
The Firefox VPN categorically does not scan for viruses and the like. Even the premium Mozilla VPN doesn’t do that!
