Anyone here tried SpiralLinux?

SpiralLinux is a set of Debian spins focused on simplicity and out-of-the-box usability across the major desktop environments. Basically a preconfigured live installer that pulls from official Debian repos, so you end up with a clean stock Debian system but with sensible defaults already sorted.

Same developer behind GeckoLinux (the openSUSE-based one), which is a good sign IMO.

Also both have MATE Desktop spins. So maybe of interest to @MATE group.

Curious if anyone’s used it as their daily driver or has spun it up before. How does it compare to just installing Debian directly?

I found it because of the potential use case of pulling from Deb testing for a SpiralLinux Rolling release.

Edit: I was curious about slow updates and found this:

One thing I agree with him 100% with in his response is this:

I will not be responding to any further comments here or in the future on Reddit, as I do not enjoy the toxicity from the majority of users on most Reddit subs. I continue to be available for responding to polite comments and questions on the official forums for GeckoLinux and SpiralLinux.

Most Reddit Linux subs, if there are 9/10 good and useful things about a post, 9/10 of community comments in general seem to focus on finding something negative. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

Also related good reading on this here:

YW. Same. So much good stuff out there.

While there is a lot of good stuff, not all of it is really accurate, so when there’s a site with consistently good information, it’s particularly noteworthy.

Yes I tried it and really liked it but it was early on and still had some major problems. That was awhile ago so I can’t say if it has been fixed. I really can’t even remember what the problems were, but I remember it wasn’t ready for daily use at the time. I know thats not helpful but it is my experience.

True! But also like the creator of SpiralLinux puts it above, a place that when effort is made, the community focuses on the 9 positives and overlooks or does not amplify the 1 negative, oversight, or bug. Because therein often lies the difference that at times makes users, like the above developer and others, avoid certain user spaces. This, for me, is even more noteworthy, positivity.

Very interesting… This now goes on my “check it out list”. Thanks for sharing.

I do always feel a bit hesitant using one of these “spins”. I’m mainly worried about support and security. I still prefer using one of the “big” distros, like Debian, Fedora, or openSUSE.
