So I “upgraded” my Evolution the other day to version 3.45.3-2. Boy did I get a surprise, they changed the interface and it’s hideous. I really wish Gnome would get off the mobile device kick.
I went to Mate just to get away from it (basically Gnome 2) and then I get this look in evolution
Son of a motherless goat! Anyone know of an email program that handles local mail (cron reports, log reports, etc) that isn’t a PIA to set up? I know there’s half a million or more that handle IMAP but other than Mutt I don’t know much about the others. Thunderbird isn’t my favorite, but I’ll use it if I have to.
Well it looks like Thunderbird or suffer so far, I tried Claws Mail and it doesn’t handle Oauth or MFA very well, actually it doesn’t (yes I’ve requested it to do that with the devs). It’s kind of sad it doesn’t because setting up local mail is just amazing. When I can get it to talk to gmail it’s nice because it’s easy to decide if you want to view an email as HTML or plain text or block images.
So I’ve downloaded TB. Hope it has improved since my last adventure with it.
I havent checked the new verison of Gnome 47 which is out now. I am using Fedora with KDE, Budgie and Cosmic Desktop. All of these on the Fedora Ultramarine. It is good to change the desktop environment sometimes. I am really liking how these work on a stable ultramarine environment. Later down i will try the silverblue fedora on a new computer.
However, i havent seen any computer running code, by keeping the specific desktop environment, wallpaper, font size or anything. It runs on what you write and ask the compiler If you see any person saying that keep this wallpaper, font, code editor, operating system and it will be better for code run walk away - a freak mental person making others sick
I mostly use the KDE and Cosmic. I tried Budgie for a week and uninstalled it as the window management is not that tilled and being coding across multiple language. i need to set this as my preference rather than customization.
Here is my one week evaluation of the Budgie Desktop and also the Cosmic one apart from writing code all day long. In evening, i spent some time evaluation for the performance and all of them are the best KDE, Budgie and Cosmic Desktop. I am using a core i5 computer, so it works well with the KDE and Budgie but not with the Cosmic and the reason may be due to the memory allocation.
So if you are using the high end computer then you can use all of these and switch between them time to time as like normal people do. Every one get bored using the same interface in Linux after some time.
if you are using the lowe end computer like core i5 then KDE and Budgie is the best choice and if you are using fedora then dont forget to remove the old kernel
rpm -q kernel
sudo dnf remove kernel name
remove the corresponding files from the ls/boot also.
@hydn I tried the cosmic but it is fast on the high end computer and not on the low end, may be because still in alpha release. If you want to try then try out with Neovim or Neovide that i use now for all of the code writing.
You can find the fonts here : https://www.nerdfonts.com/ and recommended ones are the Fira (i have used earlier), Cascadia Code (I have used earlier) , JetBrainsMono (I have used earlier) and now after reading some new articles using the SouceCode Pro( such a good ligature). Except these 4 fonts, i have never used any other fonts. I dont think you need anything beside these fonts.
Having a good font system is very much needed for writing the code as it improves visibility and usability.
@hydn This is my current setup and i am using this. No themes and anything. Ultramarine plus Ant-KDE theme. The best part of the Ant-KDE theme is that it is dark but on the folders side and the other side it is bright, so you dont have to spend lot of time looking for the files.
I uninstalled the Budgie also and later down I am thinking of using the SilverBlue also to see how these perform.
The i3 tilling one is great. I used it earlier but owing to the KDE and the Budgie i stopped using it. I agree with the same. Let me know if you find it lighter on a laptop and also if you find some other resources to use for the same.
Good word of exchange that can bring to others also some meaning.
I am using OpenSuse Tumbleweed. I did the generic desktop install and then added Cosmic DE Alpha 2. I have been on it for two days now on my desktop. So far I am functional, still trying to figure out a couple of things.
Looking forward to hearing your feedback on Cosmic. Feel to start a new thread when you do. I will probably follow a similar path, Cosmic without Pop!_OS.
I am now totally toward the RedHat as that has widel applicability and it has nothing to do with the origin where Fedora or Ubuntu has originated such as USA or UK. I respect everything and every origin but i am using only Fedora now as i am expanding my abilities and i think in that direction. Like i said this has nothing to do with them, these are just choices and can change anytime.
Those who havent used Fedora, i urge to give a try and i think you will like it especially if you have a wide display with the better graphics card. Much faster in loading time and everything.
