Welcome! Introduce yourself

Suprisingly I haven’t really noticed a difference. Both distros handle Docker pretty well.

Hello. I’m Ian Hollis from Duncraig in Western Australia, Australia. I’ve crested 70 yrs old and am a former IT Centre Manager for a small Western Australian Government agency. Whereas, in my time, a fellow could leanr and remember all we needed to know to stay tuned in with developments, the scope and pace of such knowledge is too broad for me to keep up with. However, I keep dabling and love playing computer games.
I have stayed on Windows 10 but updated to IoT Enterprise Edition LTSC in order NOT to be sucked into the Windows 11 morass.
I’m looking at transferring my lot to Linux as the early leeks about Windows 12 are even more dire that I could imagine. I essence I’m and old Windows “hold-out” who has reached the end of his patience with Microslop and is ready to move on. I am looking for a nice easy to use Linux distro that even an old codger like me can cope with. Games is my big issue. I am a Linux NOOB and neophite, aging and a bit thick in the head these days. But I’m prepared to learn as much and as fast as I can.

Welcome aboard Ian, you’re in good company here. I’ve come across quite a few folks around your age on the forums over the past few years, and some still check in now and then.

For an easy start, Linux Mint is hard to beat. Also Zorin OS. If you haven’t already, check out this post:

Familiar desktop layout, sensible defaults, and just-works out of the box, there’s at least solid 4 or 5 new-user friendly distributions for you to investigate. Most of the distributions have good community too if you get stuck. And we would be happy to help here as well!

For gaming, Install Steam, enable Proton in the settings, and most Windows games will run without any fuss. ProtonDB is worth bookmarking, it lets you check how well a specific game runs before you buy or reinstall:

Take your time, ask questions in a new thread when you hit a wall, and don’t stress about breaking things. That’s how we all learned.

Nice to meet you @ianken51 :handshake:

Yes, those distros all work easily and were easy to install (some code alterations were required for my Acer laptop). Now I’m punishing myself with an Archlinux install, nothing like almost bare bones install to wake up long buried techie skills. Back to school for this old fart!!

Hi. I first used Unix in late 70’s on pdp 11 computers when all one received from Bell labs was a tape and a good luck. When linux came along I tried it out, but mostly stuck with windows because that was dominant os. Recently I was given a machine with trixiepup64 which prodded me to renewed interest in linux and hence here.

I’m a retired truck driver. I’ve played with computers for a long time and I just want to simplify everything. I bought a used Asus Zenbook to load Linux.
