Very annoying to always be using the browser version of Discord to avoid installing their native application, based on distrust and horrible resource management ( cue Electron rant x100 )
Do we have a solution to this?
Have seen alternative Discord clients but they run the risk of ban, under the Terms of Service it seems… Thanks to being against the entire concept of chat being an extension of what was it again… CHATTING, which is what persons do, and is completely non-proprietary.
Discord skipped the protocol stage ( i.e. IRC, etc. ) and went right to walled garden, but now, as with Facebook and X and LinkedIn the flock went there so it is extremely difficult to avoid… and unlike the “social networks” chat is a necessity, as I said: ‘chat’ is not avoidable ( especially for programmers )
This is a tangent but the forum vs. chat dichotomy might also be the IT vs. CS line as well, but either way… do we have a way to use a sane application, natively built, run on the OS directly in a GUI environment, without a browser, and without using their application?
The only thought I had was using bridges over to Matrix but that is extremely hairy, both for the same reason and because I do not want to be making all kinds of connections between servers and channels over to my own Matrix servers, and all this is supposed to be easy and fast, which all kinds of heavy lifting is not.
Since magic seems to happen here I figured I would toss my coin in the wishing well again
I’v never installed discord app on linux
due my sensitive data I never install flatpak on my system
but for your case just use flatpaked discord it’s more safe
I did strace -f -e trace=network -p discord(pid)
the app send more than just chat data idk the IPs not related to discord
maybe another cdn I’m not sure, don’t native run discord sandbox it or use it in the browser
Seems like Discord is a “necessary evil” ( and walled garden ) as bad or worse than X and LinkedIn and Facebook, etc.
Am trying to see how to just not use it at all. Even discussions of native applications on the Subreddit seem to get deleted or banned pretty quickly
Do you mind if I ask what you prefer for chat, or if you just don’t try to stay current with that? I come from a BBS and IRC background but that ship seems to have sailed. And no one seems to really frequent Matrix or similar; things like Gitter are very side-show and do not seem to draw the most active ninjas
Perhaps focusing on Matrix for its own sake is the key here and just take the hit of being out in the cold in this way also, and play the long-game
