I’ll start! I’m a bit of a command line hoarder, for example on some systems I have aliases I created years ago and no longer remember what half of them do!
Oh, and no judgment here, please, but also I’ll try a reboot before troubleshooting because I guess deep down I’m fine sometimes with not knowing why.
I know, I know. ![]()
Mistake:
Last year, I really wanted to rename the Grub entries for Timeshift.
So I looked for the right script and “customized” it - on my production system
. I never, ever, ever, ever do that ![]()
Unfortunately, my changes to the script weren’t very successful. ![]()
In the end, I had to reinstall Arch… ![]()
Oh! I hope you feel lighter after sharing that. ![]()
That escalated quickly! lol
It’s fine. Actually, the reinstallation went pretty quickly. Everything was still there—all the configuration files and so on. When I first started it up, KDE looked almost exactly the same as before.
My worst wrong Linux habit was to keep credentials for my account synchronised across multiple installations. ![]()
Luckily, potential risk had never materialised. ![]()
“Was”… so nothing to confess eh? We won’t judge. ![]()
I am afraid that past sins still matter ![]()
BTW, do you think that centralised LDAP authentication is as sinful? ![]()
I’m on call this week (from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m.).
Around 8:20 p.m., I got a call (yeah, extra pay plus extra pay).
A user had deleted all MFA entries in Microsoft Authenticator. No login possible, no production possible (groceries).
A small, careless action has major consequences
Sorry, no Linux content ![]()
@toadie @hydn Do you think that new topic titled “Most funny/spectacular/epic/etc IT disaster I’ve ever witnessed” would be popular enough?
I had many spectacular und EPIC Exchange Server fails ![]()
Somehow accidentally deleting MFA entries must be one of my biggest fears, haha. Even after I’d have deleted an account, I struggle to delete the corresponding MFA entry.
Better LDAP issues then LAPD issues… (sic)

@ugnvs Go for it! Don’t worry about popularity. I do have a “jokes-on-me” or two, that I can definitely share. Haha ![]()
