California moves to exempt Linux from its upcoming age-verification law after backlash

So California is moving to exempt Linux from its age verification law (AB 1043) after all the backlash. A new amendment (AB 1856) would exclude any OS distributed under a license that lets you copy, redistribute, and modify the software.

So most mainstream distros would be off the hook. SteamOS is still in a gray area though because of its ties to the proprietary Steam storefront. The original law isn’t repealed, they’re just narrowing who counts as an “operating system provider.”

Interesting development either way!

Somewhat related: I think some good articles about age verification, why it’s intrusive, and why it wasn’t about “protecting the children” in the first place.

Systemd already implemented age verification. Although optional, I don’t see age verification going away.
