Here’s yet another glitch of performing an in-place upgrade from UM 24.04.5 to 26.04.1.
This morning I tried to uninstall the fortune program (daily fortune cookie generator), and this was the result:
$ sudo apt remove fortune-mod
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
fortunes-min librecode3
Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them.
REMOVING:
fortune-mod ubuntu-mate-core
Summary:
Upgrading: 0, Installing: 0, Removing: 2, Not Upgrading: 1
Freed space: 121 kB
Continue? [Y/n] n
Abort.
Fortunately, I read the REMOVING section carefully before deciding whether to continue, and I pressed “n”. If I understand the description of the ubuntu-mate-core package, I would have trashed the MATE desktop environment if I had pressed “y” to continue.
Aesop’s Moral: If you upgraded in-place from 24.04.5 to 26.04.1, be extremely careful when removing packages.
I don’t see that as a glitch, but a consequence of a strange decision in removing fortune-mod with the Ubuntu MATE desktop installed.
I’m guessing there is some tool/script or something in Ubuntu MATE that tries to amuse users by selecting & displaying a random fortune, and you tried to break that functionality, which is protected by a depends rule in the package.
I do not see it as a glitch as a response from a ‘in-place upgrade’, besides which if you look at the noble link I provided; I’d expect the same if you were using Ubuntu MATE 24.04 LTS.
( Martin Wimpress used to like light (or Dad type) ‘humor’ in amongst the ‘work’ stuff; I have no problem with that, as we do benefit from a ‘pun’ or ‘joke’ to ‘reset’ our minds )
Okay. I guess I can see that. But I’d still like to remove fortune from the games submenu in Brisk. I don’t know how it got there, but with mozo broken, I guess I’ll have to live with it.
And since I’m in a griping mood…
I’m beginning to hate this latest version of apt that resulted from the upgrade to 26.04.1. By default (and I haven’t found how to change that), it “pages” any apt output that won’t fit within the number of text lines in your mate-terminal window, almost as if it is piping that output through less. This is mega-annoying. I can no longer perform a search with apt search and then use the terminal’s Find dialog to search through the output, nor can I use the mouse scroll wheel to scroll forward and back through the output unless I first manually press the PgDn key enough times to finish displaying all of the results, AND THEN, press “Q” to terminate the pager.
How can slowing me down and making me do more work be anything like a desirable feature?
IMNSHO, phenomenally stupid.
(Thanks for letting me vent.)
P.S. (Attention @suivue ) At first I suspected it might be the fault of mate-terminal, but I checked. It is still at version 1.26.1, even though this upgrade to 26.04.1 supposedly upgraded the desktop to 1.28.1. Either the mate-desktop.org release notes are in error and an upgraded mate-terminal was not released, or the upgrade process from 24.04.5 to 26.04.1 did not perform a complete upgrade of the mate desktop. I’m beginning to suspect the latter. Here’s why:
My System Monitor shows MATE 1.28.2:
But hyfetch shows MATE 1.26.1:
And apt reports both 1.26.1 and 1.28.2:

You can add suivue’s ppa and this will update mozo to the working version.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:suivue/mate-1.28-test
Do an ‘apt update’: sudo apt update
You should see message saying some packages can be updated. Run, apt list --upgradeable and confirm you see updates for 4 (related) packages:
mate-menus
libmate-menu2
libmate-menu-dev and
gir1.2-matemenu-2.0
If confirmed, do an upgrade: sudo apt full-upgrade
Once completed, log-out and re-login. If you reboot, all the better.
Or you can install menulibre and use it instead of mozo.
@DeanHighland Hi,
I see how it can be confusing. I had the same doubt few months back. Things started to get clearer after I started assisting with (Debian) packaging. Short answer is: We (Debian/Ubuntu) have not transitioned into MATE 1.28 completely!.
MATE desktop project contains several sub-projects/components. At the (Debian) packaging level, not all of these components have been upgraded to their latest upstream version. What you are seeing is ‘mate-desktop’ package which indeed is at version 1.28.2 but ‘mate-terminal’ is not upgraded and still at version 1.26.1.
Debian has shortage of packagers and those who are packaging are over-stretched. Since deciding to work on reviving UM, I am working with Mike Gabriel (Debian developer and MATE packaging team member) to upgrade MATE packages in Debian. We managed to upgrade several packages but unfortunately that did not match Ubuntu’s release schedule and we missed their (stonking) freeze dates. Some packages are upgraded and available, some upgraded but did not make it to stonking release, some still need to be upgraded.
My focus after stonking release will be to,
Hope this clarifies.
@suivue: Thank you for the clarification. And please be assured that we’re all very grateful you are working on continuing the UM flavor. Thank you so much.
Solved this problem by adding the line export PAGER="" to my ~/.bashrc file. This restores the old behavior.
I did upgrade to 26.04.1 So far all good, for what I do
But when scheduling an event in Thunderbird Calendar, the date shows as M/D/Y compared to D/M/Y as before.
I’ll have to dig into the old UM forum how to bring it back - since I recall having seen a solution there.
